Our students arrive in Svalbard

This will be an interesting blog to follow.   Students from the University of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland have just arrived in Longyearbyen.   24 hour daylight that will soon change to 24 hour darkness.

I'm looking forward to following their blog.

Thursday, 29 August 2013

It was Sunday in Longyearbyen and very quiet when we first went ashore.   This meant we could take photographs before everywhere sprung to life.

More birdlife

We encountered more birdlife as we sailed towards Svalbard.

Having to just press the shutter as the birds flew overhead,  I'd no idea what was in the photographs until later...

Costa Voyager joined us in port.   I was happy to see it was a smaller ship.

and here she is reflected in the windows of Marco Polo

Friday, 23 August 2013

There are always cyclists on the road at this time of year and it was obvious these two had been shopping in Morrisons !

Honningsvåg construction

We were met with this sight in Honningsvåg as they extended the breakwater.

and there is a new photo-map of the town.
as the sun shone down it created colourful reflections in the harbour.

Approaching Honningsvåg on 05 July

A beautiful morning as we approached Honningsvåg.

MS Finnmarken was disappearing into the distance but we knew which ship it was from her distinctive shape.

Yacht 'Grace'

The yacht 'Grace' was in Tromsø on 04 July.  The last time we had seen this yacht was,  I think, in Oslo last year.

The Hurtigruten was Kong Harald.

Day in Tromsø

Tromsø, 04 July We arrived in Tromsø with a list of things to do and people to see. On the list was a visit to the Norwegian equivalent of the Salvation Army's store. Sometimes there are some amazing bargains in knitwear but not today.

Next stop, the supermarket for some supplies. I also wanted to see if it was possible to buy a Euro plug lead for the laptop computer. Because these are 2-pin and flat, they are much easier to pack in a suitcase- but we could only find adapters.

It was hot-  very hot for the Arctic with the temperature displayed as +16C !

Although some of the Totally Norway team have visited Tromsø in spring and summer, all my visits have been in winter. The little roadtrain was running.
An interesting discussion with a local resident was that 'it is quieter in summer, everyone goes to their cabins'. They were referring, of course, to the local winter population.

Something odd has happened,  the most recent photos have uploaded to the blog instead of linking back to the main albums.    Let's see what happens today.

Butterflies 1/3
no shortage of butterflies this summer although I think they are late in appearing?

Tromsø, 04 July

Marco Polo sailed under the bridge as she prepared to dock in Tromsø.  The last time we sailed under this bridge was during February darkness when we were searching for the aurora.

The ski jumps towered over the city.

The excursion buses snaked into view as the mooring ropes were being secured.   Surely too many buses for all of our tours?
Well yes,   Costa Pacifica was 'parked' behind Marco Polo.

Marco Polo arrives in Leith

04 July 2013:  Tromsø

Approach to Tromsø,  the hills near Brensholmen

passing the ferry near Buvik

This is the scenes I expect to see in Norway,  clear skies (with a few clouds) and reflections in the water

We had to sail around the island to get to our cruise pier-   and the city of Tromsø came back into view,  just.
