Wildlife, North Sea.

Just thinking back to the range of wildlife we saw during our most recent crossing of the North Sea (last Tuesday).   It was calm and warm.
  • First appearance was dolphins during breakfast.
  • Our next visitor was a gannet (more appeared later)
  • Next was a couple of sparrows,  yes sparrows!
  • and then during the afternoon we had visits from several swallows (or was that several visits from 2 swallows).

Hull and the train

We arrived along the Humber to find it rather misty and we headed in through the lock ahead of the ferry.   We caught an earlier train than planned over to York but the train to Edinburgh was delayed.

The scenery had changed since our journey south and was looking very green (and yellow).

I thought I'd not be taking any more photos as we left Norway but then saw the sunset,  or sunsets.   As we sailed out of Hardangerfjord,  the sun kept reappearing through gaps and so here is one of the photos I took.   More when I've finished the editing.
There were only a few of us on deck because most of the passengers were enjoying their formal farewell dinner or were watching the show.  Because I happened to eat in the 'boat house' it meant I was one of those out on deck.

The next day's North Sea crossing was very smooth,  the opposite of what it had been on the outward journey.  The sun shone and most passengers appeared to be out on deck.

Heading home

Now we're heading out,  through the fjords,  to the open sea.  Tomorrow we cross the North Sea towards Hull.

No more postings until we're home because there will be no connection so here is one last photograph for tonight-   the new Hardanger bridge,  that is being built,  as we sailed underneath it.

We've had a lovely cruise through Hardangerfjord to reach Eidfjord, one of my favourite places in Norway,  perhaps because we've only visited in bright sunshine?   Ocean Countess has had to anchor because one of the floating tower blocks beat us into port.   Looking back at the 2 ships,  I'm really glad we're on this one!

I've been ashore and chatted to some of the locals,  a nice afternoon.

Remember please,  that these are only short postings and thumbnail photos that I'm making as we travel.  The full range of photos and video clips with much more detail will be posted on the blog later in the year.

We sailed into Ulvik at breakfast time.   Some passengers are leaving on an excursion from here while the rest of us are staying on Ocean Countess for the cruise through Hardangerfjord  to Eidfjord.

This is Flåm,  a great tourist destination with many cruise ships visiting and the train to Myrdal.   The sun has welcomed us and, before and following the excursions,  many passengers took the time to explore the town.

We went ashore twice,  the sunshine was too good to miss.

Geiranger, another good day

We are currently sailing away from Geiranger having spent this morning and early afternoon anchored in the fjord.   The passengers who went on excursions have returned to the ship raving about them,  particularly when the mist and drizzle lifted in time for them to see the scenery.

The photograph shows the aft deck of Ocean Countess after most passengers had returned from shore and were enjoying the sun.

I'm not at all sure whether we'll have a connection tomorrow but we'll see what happens.

We're moored in Åndalsnes.  As you can see from the early photo,  we arrived in mist and rain that lasted for much of the morning.

It is now bright and sunny and beautiful scenery.

Our arrival in Bergen today was delayed because of the storm we encountered crossing the North Sea.   I'm just posting some of the photographs because I don't want to miss anything that is happening...

The first 2 photos are inside and outside the new fish market,  followed by busy Bergen and lastly Ocean Countess with a Colin Archer yacht.

Everytime we visit Hull it has changed.   This afternoon a trip to the museums changed to a trip to 'The Deep' when we realised it was so near.   Great fun and we bought an annual ticket so we can visit again next time we sail through Hull.

East Coast Rail

This morning we left Edinburgh Waverley on the 10am train to York.   We travelled 1st class,  not because we needed to but because this was the most economic option.     Not only was it the best train ticket but it also meant we were provided with 'complimentary' sandwiches and coffee.   Really good service.

Yesterday afternoon and evening proved to be very sunny and warm.   This is the view of the Premier Inn at Newhaven and the old fish market where the restaurants are.

and the view from the Premier Inn back to the main street.  Unfortunately the weather changed today and,  although we've not got the rain like the rest of the country,  it is rather windy.

Drive to Edinburgh

The drive to Edinburgh was relatively quiet and we managed to arrive early in the afternoon.

Lunch was a visit to the Loch Fyne restaurant at Newhaven.

Ready to pack the cases for Norway part III.   It won't be nearly so difficult this time because,  although we need warm & waterproof clothing,  we're not going to the Arctic.

The new camera gear is tested,  batteries are almost all charged.

Got to clean the house for our house-sitters.
