Chimney

Chimney
the story I have been told is that this (and similar) chimneys were built for road maintenance crews?

Apparently the crew arrived to work on the road, put their workmans' hut against the chimney and were able to light a fire to keep warm?

Have you heard different?

Fort William bus station?

Fort William bus station?
Perhaps not...

there were 10 buses of different sizes parked outside the Woollen Mill in Fort William on Boxing Day. Another 2 buses had just left.

One of the few places that were open, we stopped in for a snack before continuing our journey and were very lucky to find ourselves between invasions.

As I sat watching out the window the buses just kept on arriving until there didn't seem to be enough parking spaces for them all. Buses are a normal sight here but this number? I've never seen this before but then again we don't usually venture out very far on holiday days.

Snow Tree

Ben Nevis

Winter hills 1/2
Ben Nevis looked spectacular and the freezing fog cleared long enough to take this photograph

Winter scenes

the snow was almost everywhere and there is no sign of it melting

Corran Narrows freezing fog

Corran Narrows freezing fog
this is the coldest winter I've experienced for years.

This was during the morning but the freezing fog was blocking out the sunlight apart from that one spot.

Buzzard

Buzzard
when I focused the camera this buzzard was sitting on top of that branch- then as usual it flew away before I took the picture.

This time, however, it stayed within view

this aluminium trip boat ran trips between Gairloch and Portree before moving to Loch Ness.

The last I heard it was being loaded on to an aeroplane to be shipped abroad and was to be converted into a luxury yacht.

Skies

Skies
I couldn't resist taking this photograph- and many others in this winter sun just before it started to set.

I won't bore you with all the other photographs; in fact some of them are rather poor quality because they were taken from the car window.

Seeing scenery and light like this really lifts my spirits.

Weather front

Skies
this weather front was so visible I just had to stop and take a photograph. Unfortunately it was impossible to picture the full extent of the cloud in a single picture.

Castle Stalker is just visible on the left. This photograph was taken from the car as we drove up the hill.

Model ships

Model ships- dreamlike
Visit to Cornwall
just one more off-topic posting. This is a cabinet of model boats at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

I've posted this photograph because of it's strange dreamlike quality. Some of the boats in the photograph are real and sitting on the museum floor below.

The quality of the exhibits in the museum is excellent and I really like the way they are displayed so you can freely walk around and also view them from different levels.

Lots more pictures are displayed on Flickr but I'm not posting them here because I'd have to rename the blog!

This is the 'bottle boat' in which Tom McLean crossed the Atlantic from New York to Falmouth in 1990

At 37' long, it was equipped (so the story goes) with a 4-poster bed and up-to-date navigational equipment.

Tom now runs the Highland Outdoor Centre in Loch Nevis.

Priorities

Well I have a decision to make.

Do I make an effort to post new photographs every day? or do I take a break and concentrate on editing all the photographs and scanned images so they are ready for posting?

I think the latter wins. I'll take the next couple of weeks to sort through the library of photographs and then start posting again. This will result in a more organised and regular series of blog updates.

See you in a couple of weeks !

Seaweed

Flying heron

While the first heron didn't notice our presence, this one did and very quickly took to it's wings.

Fortunately I had a fairly clear view and was able to focus the camera in time to get this quick photograph.

After last week's storms the temperature dropped and the ice didn't melt in the shade.

Lull in posting

Why no recent posting?

Well I bought a slide/negative scanner and have been sitting at the coal fire and scanning lots of interesting images to display here over the coming months.

Not all the images were taken by me but I now own them so I'll be looking for help in identifying their location. Perhaps 2 or 3 images per day over the winter months and I'll be grateful for your help.
